The English clothes-press wardrobe was usually a two-part piece of furniture used to store linen and clothes. It was widespread and popular particularly in 18th century and was one of the basic furnishings of the men's bedroom. Its base is a chest of several drawers. In the top section, there is a two-door cabinet with shelves and drawers. The exhibited piece has a characteristic volute coping, the so-called “swan neck”, typical of Baroque English furniture making, at the top. The carefully selected mahogany veneer covering the outer surfaces of the chest of drawers and wardrobe completes the image of natural English elegance. It is worth mentioning that English furniture, balanced in form and extremely skilful, was highly prized on the European continent.
