Mantel clock
Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów
Part of the collection: Clocks
The bracket type cabinet clock has lost its dial with indications and the theatrical in its finial. We do not know the date or circumstances of this fact. However, almost all the mechanism and markings of the Wilanów inventory have survived, referring us to a register with a fairly detailed description. Thanks to it and on the basis of an analysis of the mechanism we know that it was a clock with indications of minutes, hours, days of the month, a carillon and a theatre. The mechanism has a separate spring drive for the running function, the quarter and hour function, as well as a separate one for the carillon. The carillon consists of eight bells and sixteen hammers (one is missing) playing two melodies coded on a brass shaft with steel pegs. It uses an equalizing drum with Gall-type chains as a drive adjustment. The mechanism has a horizontal spindle shank with a short pendulum of the heavy type. The hours and half-hours were struck using a comb system with a pinwheel regulator. After striking full hours a carillon with a selected melody was automatically switched on, simultaneously activating the figures of the theatre placed in the upper part of the dial face. The clock is equipped with repetitions. Thanks to the purchase of an almost analogous dial with a dial face and theatre in 2006, we are able to present the appearance of the dial preserved in the Wilanów collection.
