A photograph of Miriam Justman, and Paulina Włodawer and Regina Justman

Popularization note

A photo of the Justmans, mother and daughters, all visible down to the waist, hugging each other, standing by the window (?), Most likely taken in Warsaw. This is how Paulina Włodawer, in her diary (MPOLIN-A4.1.1), recalled the circumstances of her escape to the East in the fall of 1939 and the parting with her sister: Manek [Emanuel Justma, her brother] went a few days ahead of us, he was at some friends and we haven't seen much of him. Regina thought she had to stay with the parents, but that we should go. Mrs. Bialer put us in touch with Paweł Żelechowski, Emma's cousin [Bialer; The Włodawers had contact with Emma Bialer after their escape, the collection contains a letter from the woman] who was also on his way (with a friend), and the four of us contracted a cart and a peasant who was supposed to transport us.[...] apart from Mum [Artur Włodawer's mother], no one opposed particularly. They helped us pack a few of our things into a sack and gave us some food for the journey. We were supposed to leave early in the morning. My sister Regina was supposed to be waiting somewhere to say goodbye to us. I don't know what happened - was there some sort of misunderstanding regarding the time or place, but we didn't find her. So I left without even saying goodbye to the most dear and closest to me person.
