Clock with Christ crucified

Clock with Christ crucified Lantern or Zappler (cartouche) clock, with additionally installed Christ at the top, from the collection of the Potoccy family, the former owners of Łańcut castle, authored by Mathias Kotl of Vienna, from halfway through the 18th century. The face is brass, as a styled rococo cartouche, supported on two decorative legs, in volutes; on the sides, two full winged angels holding in both their hands a column (the angel on the left) and the Instruments of the Passion of Christ, the Arma Christi – a hammer and nails used during the crucifixion (the angel on the right). The angel figures, just as the Crucifixion scene, have been installed at a later date. The centre of the face is bushed. On the face – a ring with the hours, in Roman numerals, and with minutes – Arabic numerals (every five minutes). Between the numbers there are arcade lines with stylised lilies describing half-hour intervals. At the centre there is a moving wake-up clock face with two open work hands. At the top there is a depiction of the Crucifixion with accompanying Mary and St. John the Apostle. The Cross of Christ is placed on a symbolic grave of Adam, the first man (crossed bones and skull), who allowed sin to enter the world, and Christ, through his death, overcame sin, was victorious and redeemed man. The figure of Christ in an open perizoma, in rays of glory (upper body and crossbar of the cross). The clock is called a lantern clock; such clocks were popular since the 16th century, frequently found in England and German-speaking countries. Mathias Kötl (b. 1699, d. 1780) became a master in 1752. He lived in Vienna, where he studied under the clockmaker Johann Vellauer. He worked until he died, making clocks. The Łańcut clock is signed at the bottom of the clock face „Kötl” „Wien”. It is displayed in the castle chapel, on the ground floor.
