Stand for fireplace utensils

Part of the collection: Metals

Popularization note

Fireplace accessory stand The fireplace accessory stand stems from the collection of the Potoccy family; it was made in England, of brass, a precision-finished cast from the 19th century. The stand is composed of three parts: The base, the trunk and the grip. The sunk base, shaped as a decorative leaf with quite a tall edge, melding into four legs. The trunk is tall, round, with a ball grip and protrusion. At one third of the height from the top, two C-shaped arms are installed to fit the fireplace accessories. The underside of the support bears an irregular iron panel that connects to the trunk via a screw. Fireplaces that were used to heat rooms were accompanied by accessories that fulfilled two functions – practical and decorative. They were made up of wood stands, grippers, a shovel – pan, a poker, a hook, a brush or broom, a bellows to keep the fire going (mostly wooden, clad in leather), the accessory stand, the fireplace screen, the metal sheet for the front of the fireplace. These products followed fashion, and their design was dependent on the art style of the time.
