"Lofer"

Part of the collection: Malarstwo i rysunek

Popularization note

Lofer is located in Austria along the Saalach River, 42 km from Salzburg. Czedekowski would travel there for holidays with his wife and daughter, painting small-format landscapes during these visits. The tradition of summer trips continued over the years. In 1962, when he visited Lofer with Hertha, his second wife, he created a highly atmospheric landscape, larger than usual in size. Almost the entire canvas depicts a view of Reifhorn, a tall peak towering over the village, surrounded by other hills. The mountains, enveloped in pearly greys and light blues and greens, rise above a building with a dark sloping roof, next to which stands a tower. Both building, painted in ochre tones, stand out beautifully against the subdued colours of the mountains and the surrounding greenery. The roofs of the low houses darken among the trees on either side of the centrally painted building with the tower. In front of it, in the foreground, stretches a fenced meadow. A cloudy day, likely late summer, in the small village with mists clinging to the slopes. In this landscape, Czedekowski succeeded in capturing the massive majesty of the rocky Reifhorn with the small town nestled at its base. The perfectly balanced proportions and painterly lyricism of the piece demonstrate the artist’s talent.

Bolesław Jan Czedekowski (1885–1969) was a Polish painter born in Voinyliv, in Eastern Galicia. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and later became a student of Professor Kazimierz Pochwalski and Heinrich von Angeli, two renowned portrait painters. He opened his first studio in Vienna and was perhaps most associated with this city during his early artistic career. He also lived in Vienna during World War I, gradually gaining recognition for his portraits of aristocratic women and the wives of high-ranking officers. He exhibited his art in Vienna, Paris, Warsaw, and Kraków, though it was not initially well-received in Poland. After World War II, he immigrated to the United States. In the 1960s, he returned to Vienna, where he passed away on 8 July 1969. He was buried in Lofer, near Salzburg. Czedekowski was married twice. His first marriage, to Viennese Eugenia Nell in 1913, resulted in a daughter named Helena. As a widower, he met Hertha Aujezdecky, who became his second wife. It is thanks to her that the museum in Łańcut has numerous paintings by Czedekowski.
