Izabela Lubomirska née Czartoryska was born on 21 May 1736 in Warsaw and died on 25 November 1816. She was the daughter of August Czartoryski, Voivode of the Ruthenian Voivodeship, and Zofia née Sieniawska. In 1753, she married Stanisław Lubomirski, the Crown Grand Warden, later the Crown Grand Marshal and the owner of Łańcut. She was a prominent figure and an exceptional patron of the arts in Poland during the Enlightenment. One of the wealthiest individuals in Poland. She owned palaces in Warsaw, Wilanów and Łańcut, which she renovated and furnished with outstanding works of art. She had four daughters: Elżbieta, Aleksandra, Konstancja, and Julia. After her death, the sons of her late daughter Julia, Alfred and Artur Potocki, inherited Łańcut.
The plaster bust depicts the duchess with her head turned to the right. Her face is small, with a slightly hooked nose, large eyes, and prominent eyebrow arches. Her hair is pinned up high, adorned with pearls and an aigrette At the back, it is arranged in locks, falling onto the neck and the right shoulder. Her neck is tied with a ribbon featuring a bow clipped with a jewel. Her dress, with puffed sleeves, is decorated with a row of bows. A fur-lined cloak is draped over her left shoulder.
The bust is mentioned in the inventories of the Łańcut Castle from the years 1854-55 and 1862. It has been on display in the Sculpture Gallery, where it remains to this day. Similar plaster casts can be found in the National Museum in Kielce and the Museum of King Jan III’s Palace at Wilanów.
