Part of the collection: Vehicles and harnesses

Popularization note

A mylord is a country coach pulled by four or two horses. It was purchased from a renowned coach building firm, Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau, at the end of the 19th century. This elegant coach in the colour of natural wood is one of three similar coaches purchased from Nesselsdorfer Wagenbau. It was used from spring to autumn, primarily to get to hunting appointments during the famous Łańcut hunting seasons, organised in the autumn. The described two-person coach has a light body truncated in the seat section and a coachman’s box at the front. The black leather roof over the main seat is fastened to the rear side of the coachman's box with a leather belt provided with a nickel-plated mechanism that allows for folding it quickly. At the rear side of the box, there is a flap made of black leather stretched on a frame concealing a stash for the folded apron made of black leather which was spread over the passengers’ knees when it was raining or if there was a lot of dust. The seat of the coachman’s bench is wedge-shaped and upholstered with black velvet. At the sides of the box, handles with lamps were placed; the front panes are in the colours of the Pilawa coat of arms, with vertical white and sapphire stripes (lamps where the front panes featured the coat of arms colours were used in Łańcut in a number of carriages). At the footstool of the bench, there is vertical front fender, while the lateral mudguards, bent and combined by the footstool with a main broad metal stair, are made of wood, similarly to the front fender. The metal parts of the chassis are varnished in black with delicate yellow stripes. The mylord of the Potocki family in Łańcut is one of few vehicles of this type in Europe. It has been preserved in the original condition, which also makes it quite exceptional. Aldona Cholewianka-Kruszyńska
