A photograph of children and educators from the Polish Orphanage in G'azalkent

Popularization note

Children and their caretakers from the Polish orphanage in Uzbekistan. Arranged in five rows. Paulina Włodawer - second from the right in the last row (with glasses). Two prints, one with an inscription (date) on the reverse, the other without any inscriptions. From the description of the activities of the Orphanage in the diary of Paulina Włodawer (MPOLIN-A4.1.1), an entry of 3 March 1981: ,,The plan included, among others taking care of people coming from distant camps and creating a center for children. Our region was not very densely populated, but very extensive and we did not know of all the people, so first of all we had to look around and find those who needed help in that difficult period. There was soon quite a large group of  children, both those who needed care and food during the day and could return home at night, as well as those who, for various reasons, should have lived in the house. We found a nice house and started arranging it. We prepared a room (or two) for activities, a kitchen and a bedroom. [...] What a joy it was to organize and arrange it all! We all worked with real dedication and enthusiasm, not sparing the time, not regretting the effort, because it was tremendously necessary. At least we started feeding the hungry kids right away, without even waiting for the rest to be done, and the children dressed, washed, fed - for the first time in a long time - changed immediately beyond recognition.
