Cup saucer

Part of the collection: ceramics

Popularization note

A teapot or cup saucer, round and bowl-shaped, made of faience with a yellowish tone and fine glaze crackling. The edge and shallow well are adorned with a bold, graphic motif of two-tone poppies. The flowers are painted in burgundy, while the leaves and stems are in a very dark sea green. The plants are stylised in a manner emphasising Art Nouveau aesthetics and painted underglaze using a stencil. At the centre of the saucer’s surface is a single poppy flower head with a short, S-shaped curved stem. The edge of the saucer is encircled by a wide border framed between two defining lines, the upper of which also serves as a decorative element for the saucer’s rim. The border is a threefold rhythmic repetition of the motif: a poppy flower paired with two buds intertwined on long stems that loop and hook into one another.
