Cup

Part of the collection: ceramics

Popularization note

Cup – small, faience, hemispherical, with a slightly defined foot, somewhat shorter than the other cups preserved from the service. It is decorated with a strip of plant decoration, located on the upper part of the vessel. This is a two-tone motif of poppies (flower petals in burgundy-red, leaves and stems in dark green), running between two brown stripes, with the upper one being wider than the lower one. The poppy pattern (repeated twice around the rim), applied using a stencil, consists of a cup-shaped flower standing between a pair of symmetrical leaf stems. The latter, long and S-shaped, run out far to the sides and end in dormant buds. A brown border highlights the foot. On the underside of the foot, there are two green marks in stamped, underglaze print. One is the manufacturer’s mark depicting an anchor in an oval, with the inscription: S. B. and S/ENGLAND. The other is the signature of the London store SOUTH AUDLEY S/ T. GOODE & Co/ LONDON. W. Between the signatures, there is a painter’s mark in the form of the handwritten number "2" in burgundy paint.
