School shield of the Tailoring Secondary School for Girls in Lublin

The State School of Tailors for Girls was established in the school year 1935/1936 as a result of the division of the State School of Industry and Commerce for Girls into two separate institutions (see the note accompanying the school shield of the State Coeducational Middle School for Merchants). The first headmaster of the school was Dr. Stefania Pfanhauser, a Polish language teacher. The school was located at 10 Spokojna Street.

The Tailors Gymnasium functioned until the outbreak of World War II, and students returned there only six years later. However, as a result of the intervention of the Ministry of Education, the building was taken over by the 3-year long State Secondary School of Clothing Industry, where graduates of vocational and general secondary schools could study.

After Poland regained its independence in 1918, the level of vocational education in Lublin was – as in the rest of the country – unsatisfactory. It improved gradually during the interwar period. Besides the Polish Vocational School for Girls, established in 1918 – from which the Tailors Gymnasium originates – there were also the following schools functioning in the city: The Stanisław Syroczyński Craft School for Men educating locksmiths, machinist, blacksmiths and foundry workers, The Male Trade Gymnasium (the so-called Vetter School), and the Secondary School of Construction (from 1932 the Road, Construction and Melioration High School). The following art schools are worth mentioning: The Stanisław Moniuszko Music School merged in 1930 with The Music Institute, The Fryderyk Chopin Music School, and The Free School for Painting and Drawing. Complimentary vocational evening classes were also organised for people working during the day. In 1933, The Gabriel Narutowicz Public Vocational Training School was established.

After numerous changes in the following years, in 1977 The Clothing and Textile School Complex was established. It is continuing the tradition of The Tailors Gymnasium to this day. The facility generated great interest. The applicants had to meet high requirements. Up to seven candidates applied for one place.
