Postcard

Postcard with the so-called long address, published in ca. 1898, features three views of Łańcut. The first depicts the panorama of the city from the south with a view on the barracks, the second shows the synagogue building before its overhaul, and the third is a view of 3 Maja Street – now the Piłsudskiego Street. The synagogue depicted on the postcard is the only known image from before the expansion of the narthex. The building itself, one of the most beautiful synagogues in this part of Europe, was erected in 1761 within the original Jewish quarter. The basic shape of the building has survived to the present day, and the exterior changes were limited to the narthexes. The one-storey wooden narthex to the north burnt down in 1939, the two-storey western narthex, expanded at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and integrated with the main body thanks to a common roof, has survived until today. In front of the synagogue, there is a square with benches for passers-by. This small green area was located right next to the 3 Maja Street depicted below – part of the government road and the Imperial Road built in 1798-1810. The buildings along it ranged from small one-storey houses demolished by the Germans during the occupation, through two-storey brick townhouses and villas, to magnificent public utility buildings.
