Karafinka (small carafe)

Part of the collection: Household

Popularization note

A karafinka is now an obsolete term for a carafe, most commonly a glass vessel used primarily for serving alcoholic beverages. The simple form of the object indicates its use in a tavern or inn, and the small capacity of 0.25 litres suggests it was used to serve stronger spirits like vodka. The inscription pressed around the base, "Gestohlen bei A. Konilzki" (stolen from A. Konilzki), was likely intended to deter thieves or absent-minded tavern customers from appropriating it. The karafinka was made using a glassblowing pipe, employing the blowing method and shaping the form with the help of a mould. On its bottom, the point where it was detached from the blowpipe remains clearly visible, and on the vessel's surface, there are traces of the less-than-perfect production process in the form of glass streaks that were not evenly distributed over the surface.
