Natalia Sanguszkowa née Potocki

Part of the collection: Sculptures

Popularization note

Natalia Sanguszkowa née Potocka (1807-1830) was the daughter of Aleksander Potocki and Anna née Tyszkiewicz. In 1829, she married Roman Sanguszko from Sławuta. Their daughter Maria Klementyna was married to Alfred Potocki, later the Second Entailer of Łańcut, in 1851. The marble bust of Natalia Sanguszkowa née Potocka was made in Rome around 1827 by Adamo Tadolini (1788-1868). He was one of the most outstanding Italian sculptors of the Neoclassical period and Antonio Canova's associate, continuator and imitator. The bust shows a young woman with her head turned three-quarters to the right. She has an oval face with delicate features. Her hair is parted in the middle, wavy, tied up in a knot at the back, and wrapped around her head in a double ribbon. Individual hair strands are arranged from the forehead on top of the head in large spiralling curls. The torso is naked. The bust was probably commissioned from Adamo Tadolini in 1827 during Natalia Potocka's stay in Rome when she accompanied her mother on her journey to Italy in 1826-1827. At the Łańcut Castle, it is displayed in the salon in the Parade Suite, once inhabited by Maria Klementyna Potocka, daughter of Natalia Sanguszkowa née Potocka.
