Roman Sanguszko

Part of the collection: Malarstwo i rysunek

Popularization note

Painting from the museum’s collection shows a portrait of an old man shown in bust against a neutral background. It is painted with broad, clear brush strokes. The portrayed man is Roman Stanisław Sanguszko (b. April 1800 in Antoniny in Volhynia, d. March 1881 in Sławuta), prince, social activist and patriot, father of the only daughter Maria Klementyna, wife of Alfred, Second Entailer of Łańcut. He was the son of General Eustachy, served in the Russian Guard in Saint Petersburg, and was deported to Siberia for his participation in the November Uprising. He made the journey on foot, in shackles. He was later transferred to the Caucasus and promoted to officer for his participation in the fight, then served in the police in Moscow. In 1840 he was transferred to the civil service and travelled extensively. It was not until 1845 that he was released from the tsarist service and allowed to return home. He settled in Sławuta, where he contributed to the economic development of the town, established a cloth factory, bred Arabian horses, collected books and paintings. The Łańcut painting is a copy from an original made by Stanisław Grocholski (Mrs Aldona Kruszyńska), the original is kept in Kozłówka. Stanisław Grocholski (born in June 1858 in Żołynia near Łańcut, died in February 1932 in Buffalo, USA) was a Polish realist painter. He studied with Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and Jan Matejko in Kraków, and then supplemented his education in Vienna, Paris and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. With his wife Izabela Pawłowska he settled near Munich, where he opened a drawing school. In 1901 he moved to Buffalo, USA, where he worked as a clerk in the Polish consulate. He painted mainly portraits, genre scenes, scenes from Jewish life and religious paintings for churches. He was one of the most prominent representatives of Munich painting. The Łańcut painting was framed in a rich, gilded frame, decorated with palmettes with acanthus leaves in the corners, and a count crown with flowered leaves growing out of it on the upper bar of the frame. The painting is exhibited, together with other family portraits (of Alfred, Maria and Józef) in the Entrance Room on the first floor of the Łańcut Castle.
