French sabre

Part of the collection: Broń, instrumenty, varia

Popularization note

A French sabre from 1823 with a curved blade measuring 92.5 cm in length. The inscription Manufre R le Klingenthal gbu is engraved on the back of the sabre. The hilt of the sabre is brass with a knuckle guard and a small disc crossguard, while the grip itself is covered in black leather and wrapped with brass wire. The scabbard is made of iron, ending in a drag. These types of sabres were, of course, used primarily for slashes, and less often for thrusts. The sabre gained immense popularity in Poland in the 17th century, leading to its reverence as the only weapon worthy of a Polish nobleman. As a weapon, it remained popular until the end of the 19th century and even into the early 20th century.
