Appetiser plate

Part of the collection: ceramics

Popularization note

A crescent-shaped appetiser plate with a flat well and a steep lip. The lip is decorated with an Art Nouveau-style painted motif of stylised poppies, set between two brown lines. The leaves, stems, and flower outlines are dark green and applied using a stencil, while the flower petals are hand-painted with a burgundy-red paint. The lip pattern consists of four fully open, cup-like flowers on short stems, surrounded by two leaves and eight developing buds, interconnected by long, curved stems. The floral design exceeds the height of the lip and extends onto the plate's well. On the underside, there is the manufacturer's signature: an anchor within an oval with the inscription S.B. and S /ENGLAND underneath, and the signature SOUTH AUDLEY ST/ T. GOODE & Co/ LONDON. W.
