Cap of a member of the Polish Academic Corporation Astrea

Part of the collection: Education and scouting in Lublin

Popularization note

In December 1918, the University of Lublin - today's John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin - began its activities. With time, a corporate movement developed there, reaching back to the 19th century academic traditions. Students formed associations of a self-educational and social nature. The first academic corporation in Lublin was Concordia, founded in 1922. A year later, Astrea was established, which had its own statute. According to the statute, the members supported each other, taking care of their intellectual development and cultural and social skills. An important aspect was patriotic education and participation in national holidays. The highest authority in the corporate hierarchy was the Convention. The lowest authority in the structure was the Smykowskie Circle, associating candidates for full-fledged corporators, called komilitons. Additionally, the Circle of Philistines was established, whose members were former and honorary corporators. The Astrea had its own premises on the university premises. After each meeting of the Convention, there were feasts called komers.

Corporations had their own colours, which also included insignia in the form of a coat of arms and a banner. During important ceremonies, the so-called bandy, or three-coloured ribbons, were worn. A distinctive feature was characteristic caps, called deklami. Astreans wore headgear made of navy-blue cloth with a peak made of black leather. The brim was blue and silver. There was an embroidered sign of the corporation on the outer brims in the form of four ornamental letters A joined together, forming one star-like pattern. Perhaps the pattern was intended to refer to the corporation's name bearing the name of the Greek goddess of justice, also known as the Star. The mark was placed in the middle of an octogram surrounded by a circle.

The outbreak of World War II marked the end of Astrea's activity in Lublin. When referring to its traditions, a corporation named Astrea Lublinensis was founded at the Catholic University of Lublin in 2014.
