The Baltic Society for the Promotion of Agriculture was founded in 1828 in the Stralsund region. Its task was to promote agrotechnical progress, which was difficult to understand for the rural population. The award medals were presented at exhibitions in Pomerania, which provided an opportunity to present the latest developments. On the main page of the presented medal, the epigraph is surrounded by a wreath of intertwined ears and ivy branches. The inscription informs about the honourable character of the award. The reverse refers to the composition, which is a combination of allegorical and realistic elements. The Roman goddess Ceres, patron of agriculture, harvests and crops, is depicted surrounded by figures in antique robes, farm animals and farming tools. Ceres crowns the head of a man holding a horse and a woman with a cow by her side, which emphasises the farmers’ industriousness and creates the mood of a rural idyll. The composition was copied several times and appeared, among others, on the medal from the Agricultural Exhibition in Świdwin in 1873. The presented medal is signed by a Berlin medallist, Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich (1821-1887), a court medal-maker from 1864. It was minted in the well-known Berlin medal manufacture of Gottfried Loos (1173-1843), signing its products with the first owner’s name.
