Milk bottle

Popularization note

Before 1945 milk was sold in half-litre glass bottles in Szczecin. Containers of this size end up in the collection of the Szczecin History Museum, found by chance by residents of post-German houses or archaeologists, particularly in the Old Town and the surrounding area. Among several museum specimens, a bottle containing an embossed relief depicting the mythical goddess Sedina – the main figure from the well-known Szczecin monument by Ludwig Manzel (1858-1936), which decorates the fountain on Marktplatz (now Tobrucki Square) – is of interest. Invented at the end of the 19th century to personify the city's commercial and maritime character, it became a symbol of Szczecin in the 19th and 1st half of the 20th century. Her name and image were therefore often placed on local crafts and industrial products. Before the war, whole milk under the name Sedina was produced by the Stettiner Molkerei Gesellschaft GmbH, located at Turnerstrasse 68-70 (now Jagiellońska Street), on the corner of Alleestrasse (now Bohaterów Warszawy Avenue), which was later transformed into the cooperative Stettiner Molkereigenossenschaft (1943-1945). The milk factory, dating back to the company's modernisation completed in 1913, was used by the Szczecin Dairy Cooperative in the post-war years. At that time, litre bottles became more popular in milk sales. Although milk was distributed in large quantities in pre-war Szczecin, many more beer bottles have survived to this day than milk bottles from that period.
