Landscape with staffage
17th century
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Painting and drawing
Winter mountain landscape This painting from the collection of the museum depicts a winter mountain landscape with a river, over which a bridge is crossing, and a road. On the road we see two men with a loaded horse, to the right there are residential and utility buildings, with two men standing in the open door frame. On the left side of the painting, in the rock face, on the crest of which runs the road, there is a cave with a fire going; a man is approaching it with firewood that he collected. The entire image has bright, grey and silvery colours, with darker accents at the shadows. The painting is attributed to Gregorio Fidanza (b. in 1754 in Collevecchio, d. in January 1823 in Rome), an Italian painter of landscapes and marinas, who depicted them during various seasons of the year and in diverse lighting conditions. He came from an artistic family, his father, Filippo, and his brothers, Francesco and Giuseppe, were painters. He was accepted in 1791 as a landscape painter to the Accademia Clementina of Bologna. He was very popular among Poles who eagerly bought his works. He was friends with Marcello Bacciarelli, a fact that definitely simplified his contacts with Polish viewers. The discussed painting hangs on the 2nd floor of the Castle of Łańcut.
