Tailcoat

Popularization note

During the inspection of this extremely elegant tailcoat made of woollen cloth, a paper label sewn inside the front pocket was discovered. This rare find made it possible to establish the tailor's exact address, confirm the customer's name and date of receipt of the order. Thanks to the label, we know that the tailcoat was tailored for Wacław Moszkowski in the tailor's shop of Edmund Cannone, located in the Rue Royale (Royal Street) in Brussels and that it was to be collected on 25 February 1909.The tailcoat is made up of several pieces sewn together to allow the outfit to be fitted precisely. The front halves are much shorter than the back halves so that a characteristic 'swallow tail' is formed at the back. Two rows of buttons (three on each half) are placed on the front panels. The tailcoat lining and padding are of silk. There is a label inside of the collar and a hanger sewn above it from a thin strip of fabric. There are four pockets in the lining: two on the chest (on both sides) and two on  the back. Between the cloth and the silk lining, there is construction fabric in the form of linen canvas.
