Neck-collar

Part of the collection: Bronze Age

Popularization note

These impressive bronze neck-collars are otherwise known as breastplates. The presented piece, consisting of three crescent-shaped hoops crowned with small volute handles, was cast in its entirety using a special mould. The embellishment of this interesting ornament is added not only by the diagonal grooving of the surface, imitating a twisted rope, but also by the small crosspieces-connectors placed impressively between the hoops.

The neck-collar was discovered during ploughing work in 1868 in Kalisz Pomorski. It formed part of a treasure hoard that was acquired by Dr. Zimmermann, a collector from Prenzlau, shortly after its discovery. In 1872, the artifacts were then purchased for the collection of the Königliche Museen zu Berlin (now Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin) - a total of 26 items: 2 necklaces, 2 bracelets, 2 spiral epaulettes and their associated pieces, 2 clasps, 2 belt buttons, 6 decorative shields, 4 sets of buzzers, 3 pendants, and a spiral shield. However, this was not the whole treasure, because at least one other necklace came to Szczecin directly from the Heimatmuseum Dramburg (local history museum in Drawsko). Why did this happen? It is difficult to explain. The answer is a mystery that may one day be solved. One thing is certain, the former Szczecin museum has acquired a valuable monument of great display value.

The breastplate from Kalisz Pomorski, dated to the 5th period of the Bronze Age, which is ca. 900-750 BC, represents a group of necklaces influenced by artefacts from the Nordic culture. They are thought to be a local Pomeranian variety - unique and exceptional, which, as imported from Pomerania, are also found in northern Greater Poland.
