Romanesque and early gothic stone capitals National Museum in Szczecin

The ensemble includes a group of bas-relief stone capitals made by a Gotland stonemason's workshop in the first half of the 14th century. Four capitals come from the sculptural decorations of the Cistercian monastery in Kołbacz, two from the castle in Szadzek. The performances contain figural and floral motifs, incl. the scene of the holy mass with the famous image of the devil and the scene of the monks' meal. The sculptures formally and stylistically represent Romanesque and early Gothic artistic tendencies typical of Scandinavian and North German art at the end of the 13th and first half of the 14th century. The complex is unique - it is the largest and most valuable collection of medieval capitals in Poland, significant also in comparison to European museum collections. The complex is related to the activity of the Cistercian monastery in Kołbacz, one of the most important religious centers in the medieval culture of Western Pomerania.
