Pepper mill

Part of the collection: Metals

Popularization note

Pepper mill from the museum’s collection, made of brass sheet and steel, a Middle Eastern product from the 19th century. A tall mill in the shape of a narrow elongated cylinder, consisting of two parts overlapping each other (the upper part houses the peppercorns and grinder mechanism, the lower one is a container for ground pepper). The cylinder of the mill ends in a round arched lid with an opening for the insertion of peppercorns and a folding handle (crank for the pepper-grinding mechanism) – the handle ends in a brass knob. The whole surface of the mill, with the exception of the handle and the lid, is richly decorated with engraved floral and plant ornament, as well as braid work – ornaments in a strip pattern. The mill is displayed in the Eastern Corridor of the second floor with other copper products.
