Portrait of a woman
Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Outfit
The fan, preserved in fragments, made at the end of the 18th century, is one of several belonging to the collection taken from the Potocki family. It was constructed of profiled ribs cut from mother-of-pearl, arranged radially, connecting the handle with the outer rim.
As a symbol of affluence, refinement and coquetry, the fan reigned supreme in the salons of high society and royal courts throughout Europe. Its golden age was in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Without a doubt, he was one of the attributes of a lady.
