Part of the collection: History of the city and the region
The postcard from 1908, published by the main tobacco shop, shows a fragment of the Łańcut Market Square, namely a view of its south-eastern frontage. The picture was taken from the tower of the parish church, erected during the comprehensive overhaul in 1896-1900 and designed by Lviv-based architect Dionizy Krzyczkowski. Among the buildings visible in the picture, one can see some of the most prominent ones – in the foreground to the left, a large building of the school of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Borromeo, built by Stanisław Cetnarski’s company in 1897. The extension of the eastern arcade of the Market Square houses the Clerks' Casino (labelled in handwriting) funded by the Potocki family in 1894 as the seat of the Casino Society. Next to it, to the right, behind the line of Market Square buildings to the south, there is the post office building erected in 1900. To the right, one can see the townhouse of Konstanty Danielewicz with a hotel and restaurant, believed to be one of the most prestigious venues in the city – with a handwritten label saying tu mieszkam, or I live here. Within the Market Square itself, which still had the form of an empty representative square at the time, a fragment of the Town Hall is visible. This building, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages, stood in the heart of Łańcut until World War I, when the City Council decided to pull it down. Joanna Kluz
