Fan

Part of the collection: Outfit

Popularization note

The gold-plated fan was made at the beginning of the 20th century. It is one of several fans preserved from the Potocki family. It is made of thin ribs radiating from the handle to the outer ring that holds the whole together. Its surface is made of a uniform colour, delicate pleated filling made of palm leaf. The fan has an inflexible, round structure, which cannot be folded.

As a symbol of affluence, refinement and coquetry, the fan reigned supreme in the salons of high society and royal courts throughout Europe. Its golden age was in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Without a doubt, it was one of the attributes of a lady.
