Part of the collection: The family memorabilia of Justmans and Włodawers
A rectangular photo, a bust, of Aron Justman: with a thick, several centimeters long beard, sidelocks - worn by pious Jews visible as well as a black yarmulke on his head. He is dressed in a thick dark jacket or coat with wide flaps, underneath a high-button vest (or blazer) and a white shirt collar, a black tie. The edges of the photo are serrated.
It can be assumed that the person portrayed in the photograph is less than 30 years old (which he turned to be in 1914), hence the photo is dated around 1910.
In her diary (MPOLIN-A4.1.1), written many years after, Paulina Włodawer recalled saying goodbye to her parents, when she decided to escape from Warsaw to the East in the fall of 1939: “I already knew that I could not stay. […] I remember, I went to my parents to tell them about it. Dad sat at the table, had some holy book open and cried. Big tears fell on that book and he couldn't say anything. He had aged perhaps by ten years in that short time. I felt so sorry for him that with a heavy heart I begged him: »Say that you do not want us to go. If you think we shouldn't go, if you don't want us to go then say!«. But Dad just looked at me and said, »I can't tell you that.« Mom was sobbing too, but felt she had no right to stop us. I felt so terribly sorry for them that if I had known that I could help them with anything, maybe I would have reconsidered our decision. But I don't know; after all, I knew that I could not stay.
