Castle Museum in Łańcut
Part of the collection: Lamps, chandeliers and sconces
Pair of lanterns Lantern from the Potoccy collection, 19th century, portable, kerosene-fired. The cylindrical lamp is crowned with a metal, conical cover, cut as open work, ending in a vertical rod shaped similarly to the fleur-de-lis. The lantern base is round, with an interestingly cut edge, decorated with a pearl ornament shaped as a string around it. The entire housing (cylinder) is adorned by stained glass (in shades of yellow), in metal framing decorated with a pearl motif. Half of the cylinder housing is a door, openable to the outside. Behind the doors, inside the lantern, there is a round kerosene container, a burner and a narrow glass pipe covering the burner. The object is made of metal, save for the stained glass (lead glass). Kerosene lamps, beside their practical use as lighting implements, were also interior equipment, and frequently made to satisfy specific orders. The financial capacity of the principal determined the material they were made of. The lanterns adore the fireplace in the castle hall.
