Brewing was an important part of Szczecin's economy, which saw particularly extensive growth in the mid-19th century, when numerous breweries were established in the city. The brewing industry developed successfully until the outbreak of the World War I, as by that time, some of its equipment was confiscated for the war effort. Only a few companies managed to survive the crisis that came on the heels of the war. In addition to the breweries, the city housed representative offices of other beer producers, such as Schultheiss-Patzenhofen, Koestritzer, Engelhardt, and Berliner Schlossbrauerei, usually ran by reputable wholesalers. This was the job of Richard Jagow, who ran his company at Hohenzollernstrasse 7 (today Bolesława Krzywoustego Street) since 1925, later moving to Stoltingstrasse 7 (today Królowej Jadwigi Street). Not only did he run a wholesale beer business, but he was also a brewer himself. The beer he made was available in special bottles with embossed inscriptions advertising his company. Soon, they became a characteristic feature of his beer. The operations of his brewery stopped in 1943 with the first Allied air raids on Szczecin.
