A photograph of the staff of the Polish Orphanage in G'azalkent

Popularization note

A group photo of the staff of the Polish facility, as Paulina Włodawer called it in her diary from the early 1980s. In the first row visible: Anna Steinhaus, M. Goldfeld, Maria Unger; in the back row: Dawid Steinhaus, Paulina Wlodawer, Marian Margiel, Rywka Fraund, Zygmunt Blum. The photo was originally placed in the diary as a kind of illustration of Paulina Włodawer's notes. In an entry of  3 March 1981 (MPOLIN-A4.1.1), she describes the circumstances of the creation of the orphanage and the assembly of the team: “So one fine day, the delegation's trustee, a lawyer, Gliksman, came to our place and immediately began to organize the facility. Steinhaus became his deputy, and Dad, I and a few more were also employed. [...] Two of the Steinhaus charges, young girls, single, who were in the same village as the Steinhaus family and came with them, worked with enthusiasm. One, Marysia Unger, was dark, tall and handsome, the other was called Rywcia, and she was quite young, small, plump and laughing almost constantly. She had the kitchen under her care, and hustled around all day vibrant like a spark and sang from morning to evening. ''
