Postcard - K. R. Vetter Brewery in Lublin

Popularization note

The Vetter Brewery in Lublin was a thriving company operating for several decades. It was founded by Karol Rudolf Vetter, a brewer from Poznań. In 1844, he bought the abandoned buildings of the Reformati monastery in Bernardyńska Street in Lublin. He was accused of profanation. After carrying out renovation works, despite public criticism, he opened a vodka distillery and a brewery. He was the first in the Lublin region to start producing Bavarian beer. Over the years, he modernized both plants. In 1881, he introduced a steam engine, which increased production. The Vetters' products were of high quality. They were distributed in the Kingdom of Poland and in the Russian Empire. The company was awarded a prize at the Agricultural Exhibition in Lublin in 1860.

After Karol's death in 1883, his sons August and Juliusz took over the business. They continued to improve the factory, additionally opening the first malt house in the city in Misjonarska Street. In 1885, their company won a silver and bronze medal at the Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition in Warsaw. In time, the offer was extended by the production of excellent liqueurs and quality vodkas. They took care of advertising by investing in label designs. A postcard with a large-format view of the factory complex was also issued.

The heirs to the Vetters' estate was the family of Juliusz's wife, Bronisława née Karszo-Siedlewska. In 1927 the brewery passed to Tadeusz Karszo-Siedlecki, a senator of the Second Polish Republic, who died in September 1939. During the Nazi occupation, the company was taken over by the Germans. After the war, it was nationalised. It became a part of Lubelskie Zakłady Piwowarsko-Słodownicze. Today, the tradition of the former Vetter breweries is maintained by "Perła" Browary Lubelskie, while the company's management is in historic buildings at Bernardyńska Street.
