The Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, situated on one of the hills by the Oder River, rebuilt after war damage in Renaissance style, is today the City's showpiece. The historical building, the seat of the House of Griffin, rulers of the Pomeranian Duchy, has a rich tradition dating back to the early Middle Ages. It is approached from the west, among others, via today's Korsarzy Street, which initially was just a narrow passage along the City walls near the Castle and the Castle Church of St. Otto, according to the oldest record dating back to the 14th century. Still, in the 18th century, it was only a passage by the City wall leading to the buildings owned by St. Mary's Church in today's St. Mary's Square. A change was brought about by reorganising the urban space associated with the demolition of the city walls in the second half of the 18th century. Przy fosie Street was created at that time, later known as Zamkowa, where burgher houses stood. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was renamed Wielka Rycerska, as opposed to Mała Rycerska that was perpendicular to it. Already in the post-war period, Mała Rycerska regained its historical name of Rycerska Street, while Wielka Rycerska, periodically also known as Podwale, was renamed Korsarzy.
