View of Kazimierz from the Vistula

The Lubelskie Album is a work created in 1857-1859 on the basis of watercolours made in 1852 by Adam Lerue. With his drawings and watercolours, the artist contributed to the inventory of historical monuments in Lublin and the region - as he himself wrote in the introduction to the work - which was close to his heart because of his birthplace, Dubienka. Julian Cegliński and Władysław Walkiewicz, who made the lithographs in Adolf Pecq's lithography workshop in Warsaw, also contributed to the work.

The print shows the view of the northern slope, the highest one in Kazimierz Dolny, where the representative monuments of the town are located: the church of St. John the Baptist and St. Bartholomew the Apostle, the castle and the watchtower. The parish church was built in the 14th century and rebuilt in the years 1610-1613 according to the project of Jakub Balin in Lublin Renaissance style. The castle was built in 1350 on the initiative of Casimir the Great, the tower was built at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries.

Kazimierz Dolny is a town that due to its picturesque location inspired artists, which was reflected in their paintings. The history of this town dates back to the 13th century, its development is due to Casimir the Great. The most important buildings include the medieval castle, the watchtower, the church of St. John the Baptist and St. Bartholomew the Apostle, the church and monastery complex of the Franciscans, St. Anne's church, the Przybyłów tenement houses, Celejowska tenement house and granaries, which are evidence of the flourishing grain trade. Due to its urban layout the town is under conservation protection.

Kazimierz Karol Siciński, one of the main architects, said the following about the urban layout of the town: “Kazimierz owes its charm to the surrounding lush nature of the beautiful town established on the high bank of the Vistula River, on the plane of a basin, slightly sloping towards the Vistula shore and surrounded by hills on three sides - from the north, east and south; the western side is closed by the Vistula”.
