Part of the collection: Posters from Lublin from the Interwar Period
In interwar Lublin, football was a prevalent sport. Matches between teams attracted crowds of spectators of all ages. Junior clashes often preceded senior matches. One of the placards, printed in 1939 by the Military Sports Club "Unia" in Lublin, informed about such an event providing a double attraction. The central part of the sports event was to be a match between the representatives of "Unia" (the oldest club in Lublin) and guests from Stanisławów (today's Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine). A pre-match for the junior championship between the Jewish Workers' Sports Club "Hapoel" and the young WKS team accompanied the event. The organisers asked for sporting behaviour on the field and after the competition.
"Hapoel", meaning "Worker", was established in the late 1920s on Saul and Jonah Rotrubin and Melech Precelman's initiative. The club was formed after the transformation of the amateur football team "Neszer" (Eagle in Hebrew). Soon it became part of a larger organisation operating under the name "Hapoel". In Lublin, it had its seat in Staszica Street (formerly Poczętkowska Street) and then in Królewska Street. The club, apart from the football section, gathered representatives of other sports disciplines. From the 1930s, its members had training rooms at their disposal in the Soldier's Home in Lublin.
"Unia" survived the following years, acting as the "Lublinianka" Sports Club until the present day. The Lublin Branch of "Hapoel" ceased to exist during World War II.
