Part of the collection: Painting and drawing
Herd resting in a mountain pasture The oval-shaped painting stems from the collection of the Potoccy family, the former owners of the castle of Łańcut; it depicts a genre scene – a herd of cattle resting in a meadow, against the backdrop of tall rocks, from which a waterfall is flowing. At the top of the rocky mountains there are ruins of an old structure. The herd is guarded by the shepherd lying on the grass. The dominant colours are warm brown and green tones. In the blue sky there are pink and yellow reflections of the sun, not depicted. The painting is signed „Schiffner Pinx. 780„. Gotlieb Schiffner (b. January 1755 in Grosschönau, d. 1795 in Dresden) is a German painter who worked in Dresden, and remained in Warsaw between 1780 and 1784 at the invitation of Friedrich von Brühl, the starost of Warsaw. In 1787 he became a member of the academy of Petersburg, and returned to Dresden in 1788. He was a landscape and portrait painter, and a copyist; he copied in particular works by Vernet and Bacciarell. This painting is presented in the Boucher Salon, in the first floor of the Castle of Łańcut.
