Part of the collection: Archaeological monuments of the Lublin region
A bracelet made of copper sheet was found near an early Slavic settlement opened on Czwartek Hill in Lublin. Excavations were carried out in 1959-1963 by archaeologists from Lublin and Warsaw. They uncovered the remains of an early urban market settlement situated on a loess hill in the valley of the Czechówka River.
The bracelet from Czwartek was made of a strip of copper sheet with tapering ends, rolled into tubes. The band is decorated with a rhythmic ornament, so called vibrating, arranged in three rectangles, inside which there are two arches each. Bracelets of this type have been found, among others, in settlements within the territory of Grody Czerwieńskie, for example in Gródek nad Bugiem. They date from the 11th to 13th century. They also find analogies in the areas belonging to Rus in the early Middle Ages.
Finds of many early medieval ornaments from the Lublin area testify to the high jewellery craftsmanship of the craftsmen; in the case of the described bracelet, probably coming from workshops located in Kievan Rus. They also document the central position and participation of Lublin inhabitants in various trade contacts.
