Portrait of a Turkish dignitary

Part of the collection: Painting and drawing

Popularization note

Portrait of a Turkish nobleman A small painting from the collection of the Lubomirscy family, ordered by the marshal’s wife for the Turkish Apartment (later given to Henryk Lubomirski, her adopted son); a portrait (oval in a rectangle) of Sultan Abdul Hamid I (1773-1789). The man (middle-aged) is shown in full, his right hand freely hanging along his body. The sultan is wearing a navy robe, on the inside with brown fur, and framed with the same kind of fur. The front is richly decorated with silver galloons, under the top gown he wears a caftan in the same colour, tied with a broad belt, with a decorative silver clasp. The sultan wears a ceremonial cap, the pasali kavuk, with a decorative black and white feather arrangement, and a silver brooch studded with gems. He has yellow, saffian shows, with a large gold ring with a gem on his right hand. The painter depicts the sultan’s facial features with great faithfulness. The painting has a wooden, gilded and profiled frame, with a bead ornament band along the inner edge, the outer edge decorated in volute and palmette; it is displayed in the Turkish Apartment on the ground floor of the Castle of Łańcut.
