Part of the collection: Drawings by Giambattista, Giandomenico and Lorenzo Tiepolo
Giambattista Tiepolo's drawing shows a dark-haired man wrinkling his eyebrows, with a full face, hair pulled back, and a short beard. He is staring with evident anxiety at the event before him. The man is wearing a thick outer garment with a rectangular collar. Maria Mrozińska, a Polish researcher on Tiepolo's works, established that this drawing is a sketch for the figure of the Grandmaster, standing as the second person on the left side of the fresco The Marriage of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa to Beatrix of Burgundy painted in 1751 in the Imperial Hall (Kaisersaal) in the Bishop's residence in Würzburg. The drawing was done with black and white crayons on blue Venetian paper.Frederick I Barbarossa (Redbeard) of the Hohenstaufen dynasty was Emperor of the Holy Empire of the German Nation, crowned in 1155. He was also the Free County of Burgundy (Franche Comté) ruler from 1156 to 1190 due to his marriage to Beatrice I of Burgundy. He became famous for initiating the Third Crusade (in 1189) against the Islamic ruler Saladin, who occupied Jerusalem. During that expedition, Frederick Barbarossa drowned in the river Saleph. Beatrix I of Burgundy inherited the title of Countess Palatine of Burgundy from her father. She married Frederick I Barbarossa in 1156 in Würzburg and was crowned Queen of Germany, and as Empress of the Holy Roman Empire in 1167 in Rome. Beatrix took care of the development of court culture, especially in the fields of literature and chivalric culture.
