Floor tile
1850 — 1900
Museum of the history of Polish Jews
Part of the collection: Floor tiles
The gift from Przemysław Szpilman, the long-time director of the cemetery at Okopowa Street in Warsaw. The ceramic floor tile is of octagonal shape, single-coloured, in beige shade. The tile is unglazed. The whole surface of the tile is covered with a spatial, uneven pattern imitating cracks. On the reverse side the surface is uneven.
The tile comes from the premises of the pre-burial house at Flat 51, 49 Okopowa Street, which housed a synagogue and was destroyed during the Warsaw Uprising. Interestingly, on the basis of the preserved plans and sketches, a model was created, which faithfully reproduces the appearance and shape of the House, which gives hope for a faithful reconstruction of the building in the future.
