Harbour crane in Gdansk

Part of the collection: Photography

Popularization note

The building presented in the photo is a port crane on the Motława River in Gdansk. It used to be one of the city gates from the fourteenth century, transformed in the fifteenth centuries into a crane. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it lost its technical significance, but almost until the end of World War II it was still used for unloading goods. In 1945, as a result of fighting in the city, it was destroyed by the Red Army. In the 1950s it was rebuilt.

The photograph was taken at the end of the interwar period, or in the first years of World War II. The photo comes from the album of the Lubomirski princes from Przeworsk.
