Part of the collection: Photograph of Halina Olszewicka taken after her escape from the ghetto
The 2nd Polish Corps was formed in Iraq from units of the Polish Army in the East in 1943. Through Palestine and Egypt, it was transported to Italy where it took part in the battles including the siege of Monte Cassino. After taking Bologna in April 1945, the Corps was deployed to various parts of Italy as part of the occupation forces. At that time, it was strengthened by numerous volunteers from liberated German camps. Halina Olszewicka, set free from the camp, began service in Italy on 17 August 1945, joining Communications Company 390. On 6 August 1946, she was transferred to Great Britain. The photograph was taken in Great Britain, Olszewicka is standing at the bottom left. On her shoulder can be seen a crusader shield: a special badge of the 8th British Army, which included the 2nd Polish Corps.
