Portrait of a Turkish dignitary

Portrait of a nobleman A small painting (oval in a rectangle) from the collection of the Lubomirscy family, ordered by the marshal’s wife for the Turkish Apartment (later given to Henryk Lubomirski, her adopted son); it depicts a middle-aged man, in full, his right hand lowered, toughing his quiver, and a sabre in his left. The quiver and sabre are hanging from chains crossing the man’s torso. The man is wearing a red gown, framed and lined with brown fur, and adorned with golden galloons. Under the gown is a dark-green caftan, with a leather belt with a gem-studded clasp. Behind his belt he has a khanjali. On his head he wears a tall, dark green hat, with two feather egrettes and a fur trim. He has yellow saffian shoes. The figure is a Crimean Tatar khan, the last of the Giray dynasty, Şahin Giray. We do not know the painter, we only know that he was French, with the painting stemming from the 18th century. The painting has a wooden, gilded and profiled frame, with a bead ornament band along the inner edge, the outer edge decorated in volute and palmette; it is displayed in the Turkish Apartment on the ground floor of the Castle of Łańcut.
