Part of the collection: Lubliniana. Painting views of Lublin and the Lublin Region (17th–early 20th c.)
The young man depicted in the graphic is probably a musician. It is indicated by the violin he holds tightly under his arm. His sad and troubled expression and a hunched posture betray his mood. Full of resignation, he sees no prospects for what he does, what is really the love of his life - music.
Perhaps a wave of criticism has poured down on him after a street performance that has just ended? Or maybe the performance did not bring in the expected income? Is this evidenced by the man's hat lying on the bench next to him, which should be filled with clinking coins but is probably empty?
Adding drama to the scene is the fact that the musician is sitting on a bench pressed into the corner of a wall, with a gutter above him. If it rains, he will be soaked to the skin, but one gets the impression that this young man is completely indifferent to his fate. The cold probably bothers him, as the long double-breasted coat he is wearing is buttoned up to his neck. In addition, he is sitting in the street, as indicated by the cobblestones in the foreground.
Barwicki used simple means to show the loneliness of the artist and the incomprehension of the individual by society. It is difficult to make a living from art, and not everyone is destined for success during their lifetime and the wealth that goes with it. Barwicki, being an artist himself, knew that in artistic professions, such as painter or musician, there are better and worse moments, and one has to earn one's daily bread. The sad title of the graphic - Bez jutra [No Tomorrow] - shows how uncertain the artist's fate is, and that success depends not only on hard work or talent, but also on a bit of luck.
