Part of the collection: History of the city and the region
The reason why the townspeople of Łańcut prepared the Kopariusz przywilejów miasta Łańcuta (The Book of Privileges of the City of Łańcut) was a dispute between them and Stanisław, the last owner from the Lubomirski family. This dispute, which soon turned into an open crisis, forced the townspeople to write down the most important liberties. The Book dates back to 1760-1782 and contains copies of documents from 1543-1782, as well as one undated document, which was drafted in ca. 1380. Initially, it did not have a title page, nor a note regarding its authorship. Pages 1 through 24 were written by a single writer, most probably the town clerk. The others were added by three other people. The text was written by hand, in Polish, in black ink on oblong sheets of old handmade paper. It was probably bound in the interwar period, and the title was added in handwriting on one of the first blank pages. It has a total of 52 numbered pages and contains copies of 25 documents – several of them survived to this day. Among them, 13 documents are ordinances issued in the 18th century by the Lubomirski family, 8 date back to the 17th century dates and only 4 are older. Unfortunately, at the time of creating the Book, not all documents were available, including the foundation act, which did not survive to that day. The documents included in the Book mainly concern townspeople's duties, order ordinances, as well as the legal and moral regulations in force. Some acts were issued on the initiative of the owners, while some were enacted at the behest of the subjects. Joanna Kluz
