Part of the collection: Painting and drawing
Painting from the museum’s collection depicting a vast landscape with staffage in the lower left corner: Christ seated with the apostles listening to him. The painting dates from the 17th century and is a reference to the work of Gaspard Dughet, also known as Gaspard Poussin (b. 1613 in Rome, d. 1675 in Rome). Pupil and foster son of Nicolas Poussin, he was a painter of the Baroque period, of French origin, working in Italy. He painted mainly landscapes, especially Italian, with small figural scenes with themes taken from the Bible (as in the painting in question). In his works, he glorified the beauty of nature with the landscape usually occupying most of the painting plane. He worked in oil, tempera and gouache. He became very popular and fashionable, and received many orders, among others from Pope Innocent X. The painting, framed in a wide, profiled, gilded frame with a pearl ornament, is exhibited in the chapel on the ground floor of the castle.
