A letter

Popularization note

A letter from the Warsaw ghetto to Asino, to Paulina Włodawer, written during the Chanukah holiday: first pages written by Regina Justman, on the last page notes by Aron Justman and the others present - as it seems from the letter - in the Justmans' apartment with a festive visit: Lejb Justman and his wife Chawy Fajmylber, also Miriam Justman and Adela and Szulim (we do not have any further information about these people; they write that they have lived in Warsaw for a year). Black Blurs - Censorship. Regina Justman writes: “We have been occupying the same room for almost a year - spacious and very decent, furnished and equipped with various necessary accessories [here, a censorship of one word] our own, family and friends. The tiled stove also serves as a stove and does its job well whenever the weather is moderate. [...] Until recently, my monthly income exceeded twice my salary in the bank (now it is less), but the purchasing value is incomparably lower. Bluma earns about half of that, sometimes she comes up with something additional, but it is difficult to count on it. One thing is certain: our assets (because we did not have any) did not diminish, but certainly increased, we did not sell anything and somehow we survived this terribly long year and four months without experiencing severe hunger. This is really a lot. [...] you remember Jadzia's little cold cubicle lit by a candle and her black kitchen where I scrubbed the floor. So take comfort: now I do not scrub the floor myself, although many women who could not imagine it last year, do it now.
