Bottle Case

Part of the collection: Goldsmiths

Popularization note

Bottle Case The bottle case from the Potocki collection, made of coated metal, dates back to the end of the 19th century; it is a product from the USA. The case for alcohol in shape of a bottle comprises two parts combined with a hinge (the parts open to the outside and the bottle can be put inside) with a decorative handle made of vine. The bottle is quite tall with a moulded mouth, decorated with a strip of flowers and vine. At the bottom of the body, there is wide decorative band with floral and vegetal decoration. The inside of the bottle is lined with soft fabric. Cases of this type were used for two reasons. The soft fabric inside prevented the glass bottle from breaking and at the same time, it performed an insulating function, i.e. kept the temperature of the alcohol. The second important function was the aesthetic of serving the alcohol ˗ it must be remembered that old alcohol bottles kept in dark and moist premises often bore traces of mould, dirt and were not particularly appealing. Thanks to such inventions, the described case could be used to serve any alcohol at a desired temperature in an aesthetic or even sophisticated manner.
